Solstice Snake ~

One of the best solstice sites in the Southwest and found not too far from Moab, Utah.  Each year on the Summer Solstice, because of the alignment of both the sun and the precipice above this 17 foot long petroglyph of a snake, for only about two minutes, a beam of light shines down on the head of the serpent and forms an image of an upside down arrowhead (spearhead).   It was truly an amazing experience seeing this take place.

I find that many serpent petroglyphs in the Southwest are made up of 13 bends in their body.

The Solstice Snake

Here you can see the relationship between the Solstice Snake and the precipice above it.

This was taken of the precipice just as the sun was starting to create the light image of the arrowhead on the serpents head.

To give a better idea of how large the serpent is....I took this photo of my hiking friend Alanna just before the Solstice image appeared on it.
